Alaska Security Guard Certification Practice

In Alaska, security guards do not have the authority to make formal arrests like police officers do. However, they are permitted to detain individuals in specific situations, typically when they witness a crime or have reasonable suspicion that someone has committed an offense on the property they are protecting. This detention is meant to hold the individual until law enforcement arrives.

The distinction is important as it delineates the limitations of a security guard's power. While they can take actions to maintain safety and enforce company policies, their role does not extend to making arrests. This protocol aligns with the focus on maintaining public order while relying on trained law enforcement to handle arrests. Thus, the statement that security guards can detain but not arrest individuals accurately reflects the legal framework governing their responsibilities.
